ICM 2008-2009 Scholarship Information 

INTRODUCTION

The Islamic Center of Minnesota (ICM) Scholarship Fund was endowed in 1992 with the vision to be available annually to the college students based upon their academic achievement, financial need and service to the community.

The Islamic Center of Minnesota board is pleased to announce the renewal of the past promise made to the community and to students to acknowledge the hard work and commitment they have been showing in serving the community as the ambassadors of Islam.

We are looking forward to making the dream of the initial donors a reality on a more consistent basis in acknowledging our youth. We seek the support of the community with your duas, feedback and financial assistance Insha’Allah.

ELIGIBILITY

The purpose of the ICM Scholarship is to provide financial assistance to outstanding youth in our community, who are residents of Minnesota, to encourage higher education.

To be considered for the ICM scholarship, an applicant must meet the following eligibility requirements:

SCHOLARSHIP ELIGIBILITY:

The applicant of the ICM scholarship must be a full-time student registered for a degree program in an accredited college or university. Students in their senior year of high school, or at any level of college education, may apply for the upcoming academic year.

The children or dependents of the Scholarship Committee are not eligible to apply.

Two recommendationletters from non-family members who are familiar with your leadership and character are required.

Applicant must be a Muslim, and a resident of the state of Minnesota

All appropriate documents along with the application form must be postmarked no later than July 31st 2008.

A minimum GPA of 2.5 (on a scale of 4.0) is required

The following criteria will be used by the Scholarship Selection Committee:

SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA:

GPA and Academic  Excellence-An Official Transcript from the school/college/university showing full time student, past grades, and courses registered as applied

Community Involvement & Extracurricular Activities - Experience from the past 5 years, please make sure you provide references and supporting documents.

Two Letters of  Recommendations - One from a school teacher/counselor and the other from an Islamic organization

3 Personal Essays – As indicated in the application, no more than 2 pages. Please use examples to support your points ________________________________________________________       ICM Membership -If you are an ICM member(Individual/Family) and know your membership number, write your membership number on the application.

Application grading criteria:

 GPA and Academic Excellence [20 Points]

• Two Letters of recommendation [20 Points – 10 each]

• Extracurricular activities [20 Points]

• Three Personal Essays [21 Points – 7 each]

• Community Service [9 Points]

• ICM Member [5 Points]

• General Impression [5 Points]

DEADLINES

Please note the following deadlines that the applicant will need to meet to be considered for the award:

TASKS	DEADLINE
Completed Application	July 31st 2008
Reward Notification Sent to Applicants	August 31st 2008
Checks mailed to Schools	September 15th 2008

SCHOLARSHIPS:

The following award policy will be put into place for the 2008 – 2009 year: 

•       Checks will be issued in the name of the recipient and the institution.

•        Incomplete applications will not be considered.

•       Scholarship Awards are one-time only and are non-renewable. Award recipients from previous year(s) will need to reapply every year to be considered along with other applicants for the scholarship award.

•       The ICM Scholarship Committee will be solely responsible for all matters related to the scholarship and the scholarship fund.

•       The ICM Scholarship Committee’s decision will be final.

•       For the 2008 – 2009 year Islamic Center of Minnesota will be awarding $10,000 in scholarships as listed below:

NOTE:

1. Don’t forget to indicate if you are applying for a financial & merit need based or merit based award in the application form. Please provide the needed financial information to support your financial need, if you are applying for the financial need based award.

2. Recipient of this scholarship will need to talk to community for 3-5 minutes on the scholarship awarding event.
